RealGreenWorld Talks Restoration and how Saving Embedded Energy Can be Better Than Building Green.

We will be talking with Salt Lake Pediatrician Adam Stevenson and his wife (my cuz!) Chelsea about how they are restoring one of the oldest homes in Centerville Utah to preserve it.Many people think that the best thing to do to reduce your carbon footprint is to buy the “latest/greatest” green gizmo. Many times using something that already exists is much better for the environment. Embedded or Embodied energy is key to this. In order to manufacture anything it take energy.

If something is manufactured today it usually take more energy to produce than it did to make the same thing 100 years ago. Automation makes our lives easier but causes us to use a lot more energy to do what we used to do with our arms and backs. If something was built in 1912 not only did it take less energy to make but it has had one hundred years to amortize the embedded energy so it is often better for the environment. Using up something that is already is usually better than building something new and green.
