SolarTek Installs These Attractive Solar Shingles All Over Utah

Solar Panels are not often thought of as being atractive. This installation will change your thoughts on the look of solar on your roof. Using Solar Photovoltaic Shingles this job is so beautiful while still being functional.

Solar Panels on Utah Home

Another attractive install by SolarTek Solutions

The Sims wanted solar but live in a development full of restrictive covonants (often called CC&R’s.) Together the Sims and SolarTek helped the Home Owners Association understand how Solar Photovoltaic Shingles could create the electricity and energy the Sims desired with out impacting the look of the development. Everyones needs have been met with the completion of this project. The home owners got power from the sun which lowers their power bill and gave them peace of mind that all of the medical devices will work even if the power goes out. The HOA is pleased with how attractive the Solar Photovoltaic Shingles are and approved them for instillation in the development.

This movement towards attractive solar options is growing and every day there are more options for both solar photovoltaics and solar thermal that creates little or no impact on the look of a building.

    Dennis,

A couple of questions: what, in kWh will the system produce? what is the efficiency of the shingles? and what did the system cost (before and after incentives). the video was cool but I was hoping the learn more.

Also isn’t it funny that a HOA will be super sensitive about solar panels yet the roofs have all sorts of “ugly” vent and plumbing pipes and turtle back roof vents sticking out of the roof? Every time I bring that up with an HOA member they get the deer in the headlights look :)

    • Jordan – thank you for the questions. This is a 4.8kW system so with the efficiency ratings this system will produce on average in Utah 21-22kWh per day. Utah gets about 5.26 hours of sunlight per day on average considering all the snow days, cloud cover etc. The efficiency of the modules is between 13-14% depending on the color and whether we are talking about the tile or the shingle product. Most regular modules are between 13-15%. The total cost for this system will be about $8.50 – $9.00 per watt. This is definitely a high end system. This includes the Custom Brown Shingle which is the highest end price point and the Battery Backup System. The Battery Backup System is a healthy % of the overall cost as well. We have several other options in terms of system components but these are definitely aesthetically pleasing and will fit the requirements of most HOA’s! After the tax credits and if there are rebates in place this system would be around $4.00 per watt. Again, depending on the system components we have installed systems that can be between $2.30 and $4.50 per watt. Please let me know if you have any additional questions. I would happy to assist in any way I can.

Trent, Thanks for your added information! I am sure people will have a lot of questions like this when they check out your entry in The Utah Solar Tour Sept 24th 2011. This helps a lot to understand a bit more about the project. The one thing I want to point out about the efficiency of this project is that is it where not for these shingles the HOA would not have approved them so in a “FUZZY MATH” sort of way they have 100% better efficiency than the alternative. Just sayin! ;-)

Thanks for the great questions. I am only the host so I did not know the answers to a few of these but I got ahold of Trent and it looks like he posted an in depth answer to you questions. I hope you are going to check out this house during the tour…unless Harris Dudley (http://www.radiantfloor.com/) has a home on the Solar Tour this year. If you do have a home where will you be at for those of us with interest in Solar Thermal installations?
